Contact: Gulfport Public Library; (727) 893-1074
GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, March 9th with a documentary exploring the historic women’s music movement. This is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month. Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center. Feel free to bring your own “brown bag” supper and beverages.
Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming the titles of films in public press releases. But feel free to call the Library at (727) 893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series. Or find titles and more information at the Library’s Facebook page: www.Facebook.com/GulfportLibraryFL.
About the March 9th film: “Woodstock Meets Women's Liberation in a Film about a Movement that Exploded the Gender Barriers in Music.” To help celebrate Women’s History Month, this 2002 documentary looks at the beginnings and evolution of the women’s music cultural movement as it challenged the mainstream music industry. The film features interviews and musical clips from pioneers of the movement and musicians who have been influenced by it, including Chris Williamson, Meg Christian, Holly Near, Ferron, Margie Adam, Linda Tillery, Tret Fure, Fanny, Melissa Ferrick, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Indigo Girls, Ani DiFranco and many more. (Not rated).
Save the date for the next film in the series, Thursday, April 13th. This critically-acclaimed comedy explores the adventures and misadventures of a bisexual Iranian-American woman with family traditions at odds with her own evolving sense of individuality.
Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
